Channels -- Tripp Frohlichstein
Tripp Frohlichstein founded MediaMasters, Inc., in 1986 after spending more
than a decade at KMOX-TV, the then CBS-owned and operated station in St. Louis. During that period, Frohlichstein acted in various newsroom management capacities, culminating with assistant news director.
With MediaMasters, Frohlichstein has traveled throughout the United States, Canada and Europe to train thousands of people in corporations, associations, government and non-profit organizations on how to work with the media, how to handle crises, how to give presentations and how to communicate more effectively.
In addition, Frohlichstein served as a TV news critic for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and as an adjunct professor in the Webster University Media Department. Frohlichstein also acted as television critic for KMOX-CBS radio from 1987 through early 1996.
AM/FM -- Joe Sonderman
Joe Sonderman is a free lance writer based in Hazelwood, Mo. He started in radio at KCFV, the campus radio station at Florissant Valley Community College, now St. Louis Community College - Florissant Valley. He worked on-air at KHTR (103.3 FM) where he became music director. He also worked as a producer at KMOX. He stayed at 103.3 as music director and morning co-host when it changed to KLOU in 1988 and left in 1990.
After stints at WIL and KSTZ (105.7), Sonderman returned to KLOU from 1992-1994. Then he worked at Metro Networks and did mid-day traffic reports for KMOX beginning in 1995 until 2003. He also was Metro News bureau chief and oversaw Metro operations at the Missouri Department of Transportation Center in Chesterfield.
Sonderman is now back at KMOX, working behind the scenes.
Sonderman is the author of three books, St. Louis 365, St. Louis People 365 and 1904 World's Fair 365. He is a Route 66 historian and collector with a website about the subject (66postcards.com) and an on-line archive of postcard images from the road.
Sports/Media -- Joe Pollack
Joe Pollack has been a professional writer for more than a half-century, touring the media as a general reporter; sports writer; columnist; movie, theater and film critic; restaurant, wine and travel writer. He has duplicated some of these roles on radio and television.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he came to the Midwest in 1947 to attend the University of Missouri School of Journalism. After graduation in 1952, he became a sports writer for the Jackson (Miss.) Daily News, but was drafted a few months later, serving his Army time as managing editor of the Fort Lee (Va.) Traveller, spelled with two "l's" because that's the way Gen. Robert E. Lee spelled the name of his horse.
Pollack returned to Mizzou in 1954 to attend graduate school and to become the first sports director when KOMU-TV went on the air. He joined the St. Louis Globe-Democrat as a sports writer in 1955, moved to the St. Louis Football Cardinals as director of public relations in 1961 and to the Post-Dispatch in 1972 as movie and theater critic, taking up restaurants and wine a few months later. He retired in 1995 but has continued as a free-lance writer and as movie and theater critic for KWMU-FM.
Media/Politics -- Terry Jones
Terry Jones is a professor of political science and public policy administration
at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He is the author of three books and more than 40 scholarly articles and book chapters. His two latest books are The Metropolitan Chase: Politics and Policies in Urban America, released last year, and Fragmented by Design: Why St. Louis Has So Many Governments, published in 2000.
Radio History -- Frank Absher
Frank Absher is in his second decade of writing for SJR. He
has more than 30 years of experience in electronic media as
a broadcaster, journalist, manager and consultant, and he
has, for many years, taught broadcasting and journalism at
the college level.
Frank founded the St. Louis Media Archives in 1987 while a
member of the Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis Board of
Directors and he continues to be active in the preservation
of local media history. He and his wife Barbara live in St.
Louis in their rehabbed historic home.
